This 2 lane road extends 470 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains and connects Great Smoky Mountain National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the north. It further extends for 105 miles on Skyline Drive thru Shenandoah National Park. Built from the mid 1930's thru the 1950's, this very hilly and sharply curved road is well maintained by the National Park Service. With few entrances or exits and a speed limit of 35 miles-per-hour, the spectacular scenery can be appreciated at the many pull outs and overlooks. Because it's about 90 miles from Washington, DC, many weekenders visit to hike the Appalachian Trail and find wilderness camping.
