The mighty saguaro cactus is indigenous to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. It natively reproduces in a limited elevation band of 1,500 to 3,500 feet with most of those in the Phoenix area being transplanted. Saguaros have a relatively long lifespan, up to 250 years, and may grow their first side arm any time from 75 to 100 years of age. Saguaros soak up the rainwater and visibly expand. They conserve the water and slowly consume it. Cresting, is a rare condition of abnormal growth caused by damage to a plant's growing tip and can be from exposure to cold and frost. A crested saguaro cactus is a sight to behold.
